Cool Chunky Stripes Blanket – a herringbone half treble crochet stitch blanket

This Cool Chunky Stripes Blanket was so easy and so relaxing to make. There’s something irresistible about bold, colourful stripes worked up in a chunky yarn. This blanket is cosy, modern, and beginner-friendly, making it a satisfying project whether you’re crocheting for yourself, a gift, or home décor.

The herringbone half treble crochet (HBhtr) stitch creates a lovely textured fabric with a soft drape, while the chunky yarn makes it work up quickly. The colour changes keep it fun and engaging!

Materials

Yarn: to make this blanket you will need 1152m of chunky yarn, 144m in each of six colours and 288m in one further colour.

For my sample I used Stylecraft Special Chunky in:

  • Teal (100g/144m)
  • Cloud Blue (100g/144m)
  • Aspen (100g/144m)
  • Aster (100g/144m)
  • Denim (100g/144m)
  • Lavender (100g/144m)
  • Silver (200g/288m)

Crochet hook – 6mm hook, or appropriate hook to achieve gauge.

Needle to weave in ends.

Scissors

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • HBhtr – herringbone half treble – yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch, yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch as well as the first loop on the hook (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through two remaining loops.
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • ss – slip stitch

UK terms are used throughout – the HBhtr is herringbone half double crochet in US terms, double crochet is a US single crochet.

Gauge

  • 11 stitches x 10 rows = 10cm x 10cm
  • Adjust hook size as necessary to achieve gauge.
  • Gauge is not critical for this project, but it may affect yarn quantities

Skill Level

  • Suitable for beginners

Size

  • Finished blanket: approx. 79cm x 103cm (31in x 40in)
  • Easily adjustable – starting chain can be any number according to desired width + 2.
  • To adjust width: ch any number + 2. For each 10 cm increase, add approx. 11 sts.
  • To adjust length: add or subtract rows in multiples of 4 for even stripe repeats.

Pattern Notes

  • Foundation chain: any number of stitches + 2.
  • For this blanket: ch 85.
  • Change colours every 4 rows (or as desired).
  • Work last stitch of each row into turning chain to keep edges neat.

Pattern (UK terms)

  • Foundation Row: Ch 85 using Teal yarn.
  • Row 1: HBhtr in 3rd ch from hook (the 2 skipped chains count as the first stitch), HBhtr in each ch across. Turn.
  • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as st), skip first st, HBhtr in each st to end, working final HBhtr into turning chain. Turn.
  • Rows 3–96 (or until desired length): Repeat Row 2. Change colour every 4 rows according to chart below.

The herringbone half treble stitch is very satisfying and creates a lovely stitch definition.

Border

The border is optional. It is really simple and consists of two rounds of double crochet.

  • Round 1: With Silver yarn, work 1 dc across the top. 3dc in the corner. 1dc evenly down the side. Repeat around. Join with ss.
  • Round 2: 1dc in each st, 3dc in corners, join and fasten off.
