Coffee Time Throw – a Granny Square Design

The Coffee Time Throw – a blanket design based on the traditional Granny Square. The colours are a beautiful mix of browns, pinks and blues. Cosy up with your favourite hot drink under this wonderful blanket.
There are 25 Granny Squares to make (arranged in a 5 by 5 formation). Each Granny Square is worked over 11 rounds, joining to the adjacent square using the join-as-you-go joining method on round 11.
All of the squares have a different colour scheme, but round 11 will be either Cream of Walnut.
To finish the blanket off a simple Granny Stitch border is worked over 8 rounds.
Crochet Level
Suitable for beginners (you will need to be able to do the โjoin-as-you-go joining method โ although you can sew the squares together if you choose).

Notes on the Granny Squares
The pattern is based on the traditional Granny Square. The Granny Square uses groups of treble crochet to form โtreble clustersโ. It is a really simple technique and suitable for a beginner. There are many different ways to make a Granny Square .
The pattern also suggests you turn the work over after each round โ I find this helps to keep the square even and it also makes the work reversible.
A video tutorial is available for making the Granny Squares. The written pattern is below.

There are 25 Granny Squares to make. Each one is different.
Granny Square Pattern (UK terms)(colours as for square A)
Foundation Using Silver yarn, ch4, join with ss in first ch to form a ring (alternatively you can use a magic ring).
Round 1 Continue with Silver yarn, Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr in ring, (ch2, 3tr) 3 times, ch2, join with ss in 3rd ch of beg-ch. Fasten off.
[4 groups of 3tr]
Round 2 Turn work over. Pull up a loop of Powder Pink yarn in any ch2 corner space. Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into same space, *(3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch2 corner space*, repeat from *to* twice more, 3tr in corner space where you started, ch2, ss into 3rd ch of beg-ch. Fasten off.
[8 groups of 3tr]
Round 3 Turn work over. Pull up a loop of Walnut, in any ch2 corner space Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into same space, *3tr in space formed between the treble clusters from round 2, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch2 corner space*, repeat from *to* twice more, 3tr in space formed between the treble clusters from round 2, 3tr in corner space where you started, ch2, ss into 3rd ch of beg-ch. Fasten off.

Round 4 Turn work over. Pull up a loop of Stone in any ch2 corner space Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into same space, *3tr in next two spaces formed between the treble clusters from round 3, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch2 corner space*, repeat from *to* twice more, 3tr in the next two spaces formed between the treble clusters from round 3, 3tr in corner space where you started, ch2, ss into 3rd ch of beg-ch. Fasten off.

Round 5 Turn work over. Pull up a loop of Denim in any ch2 corner space Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into same space, *3tr in each space formed between the treble clusters from the previous round, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch2 corner space*, repeat from *to* twice more, 3tr in each space formed between the treble clusters from the previous round, 3tr in corner space where you started, ch2, ss into 3rd ch of beg-ch. Fasten off.

After 4 rounds
After 6 rounds
Rounds 6-10 Repeat as for round 5
Work 10 rounds of each square. You need to make 25 squares in total. The colour order I used is as follows, but you can choose your own order or randomly pick the colours. All of the squares either have Walnut or Cream for round 11.

After 9 rounds
After 10 rounds

Round 11 (Joining round): Repeat as for round 5 but join to the adjacent squares using the join-as-you-go joining method (which means slip stitching to the adjacent square after each set of treble clusters). Alternatively you can complete round 11 and then sew the squares together. Arrange the squares as follows:

Border
The border is really simple. It is 8 rows of treble clusters. You can use whichever colours you have left, I have listed the colours that I used below. I came very close to not having enough Mocha for the 6th round of the border – so work out which colours you have plenty of.

Border round 1 Using Stone (St) yarn pull up a loop in any ch2 corner space Ch3 (counts as first tr), 2tr into same space, work along the side of the blanket inserting *3tr in each space formed between the treble clusters from the squares below.
When you come to the join between the two squares insert the treble cluster in the slip stitch that was formed when joining. Work (3tr, ch2, 3tr)* in the corner and then repeat from *to* until you reach the start of the round, 3tr in corner space where you started, ch2, ss into 3rd ch of beg-ch.
Border round 2 repeat as above using Duck Egg (Du).
Border round 3 repeat as above using Cream (C).
Border round 4 repeat as above using Silver (Si).
Border round 5 repeat as above using Powder Pink (P).
Border round 6 repeat as above using Mocha (M).
Border rounds 7 and 8 repeat using Walnut (W). Fasten off.
