Crochet Level & Skills Required
- A simple pattern using UK treble crochet, UK half treble crochet and chains.
- Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques (including working in the round) and terminology is assumed.
- Knowledge of the join-as-you-go joining method is advantageous.
- Pattern is based on the traditional Granny Squares with different colour rounds – If you’re new to crochet, try making a single square first to practice.
Materials
Crochet Hook: 4mm or size needed to achieve gauge
Yarn: DK weight yarn in seven colours, 295m for each of six colours and 1180m of a joining colour
The sample uses Stylecraft Special DK (100g/295m) in each of Lemon (A), White (B), Spring Green (C), Aspen (D), Wisteria (E) and Magenta (F) and Fondant (G) and 4 balls (400g/1180m) in Pomegranate (H).

Notions: Scissors and needle to weave in ends.
Finished Size
Finished Size: Approximately 135 cm x 135 cm (excluding tassels)
Gauge
Gauge: 4 rounds in pattern = 10cm/4in, adjust hook size as necessary. Gauge is not critical for this project but may affect finished size and yarn quantities.
Notes on the Pattern
- Colour order for the Granny Squares is random – have fun mixing your shades!
- The Granny Square uses treble clusters (groups of 3 UK treble stitches).
- I use 2 chains in each corner, but some crocheters prefer 1 or 3 – adjust as you like.
- I recommend turning your work after each round – it keeps the square even and makes the blanket reversible.

Instructions for the Granny Squares
The pattern is based on the traditional Granny Square. On this page you will find the written pattern for the Granny Square. If you would like a step-by-step photo tutorial and video tutorial, these can be found here:

You need to make a total of 81 Granny Squares. Make the Granny Squares up to and including round 5. You will be adding a 6th round later with the joining colour when you will join the squares using the join-as-you-go joining method.

Colour order: I used a random colour order, ensuring that the colours were balanced. Inspiration can be found in the photos further down the page.

Arrangement of the Granny Squares
Arrange the squares in a 9 by 9 formation – making sure to balance colours.
Example shown below.

Joining the Granny Squares
- Use the join-as-you-go method while working a 6th round with the joining colour (H – Pomegranate).
- Alternatively, crochet all squares fully unto round 6 (round 6 would be with the joining colour for all of the squares), then join with whip stitch or slip stitch.
