Modern Crochet Rectangle

The Modern Crochet Rectangles are fun and simple to make and are a modern variation on my Rectangle Granny and are also an interesting variation of the traditional Granny Square.

Making the Modern Crochet Rectangle
Each rectangle consists of a chain of 21, 1 row of double crochet and then 2 rounds of half treble crochet (htr) clusters (made up of 2 half treble crochet stitches).

The instructions for making the rectangle is as follows:
Foundation Rows and Round 1
- Ch21 (Fig 1).
- 1dc in 3rd chain from hook (insert in ‘back bump’ shown by needle in photo) (Fig 2).

- Dc all the way along to the end (Fig 3).
- Turn (Fig 4).

- Ch2 (counts as 1htr).
- 1htr in first st (Fig 6) – indicated by needle (Fig 5).

- Skip 1 stitch.
- Insert 2htr in next stitch (Fig 8) (placement shown by needle in (Fig 7).

- *Skip 1st, 2htr in next* and repeat from *to* until the last stitch (which is the turning ch at the start) (Fig 9).
- Insert 2htr in the turning ch formed at the start (placement indicated by needle in Fig 10).

- [2ch, 2htr, 2ch, 2htr] in same space (Fig 11).
- Skip 1st, insert 2htr in next (should be opposite another 2htr) (Fig 12).

- *Skip 1st, 2htr in the next space*, repeat from *to* to the end of the row (Fig 13).
- ch2, insert 2htr in same space as 2htr made at the start of the round. Ch2 and ss into top of beg-ch (Fig 14).

Round 2
- Turn the work over (Fig 16).
- Ss in the ch2 corner space you have just formed, ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in same corner space (Fig 17).

- Insert (2htr, ch2, 2htr ) in the next ch2 corner space (Fig 19).
- Needle placement indicates placement of stitches (Fig 18).

- Needle indicates placement of the htr cluster which is in the gaps between the htr clusters from the round below (Fig 20). You will be working in these spaces between the clusters from the round below throughout round 2.
- Work your way along inserting 2htr in each space until you reach the next corner (Fig 21).

- Work (2htr, ch2, 2htr) in the next corner space (Fig 24).

- Work 2htr in each space along until you reach the start of the round. Work (2htr, ch2) in the corner where you started and ss into the beg-ch (Fig 24).
