Dinky Hexagon Cushion

Brightly coloured crochet hexagon cushion on a blue armchair

I recently published a free crochet pattern and a photo tutorial on how to make the Dinky Hexagons. The tutorial includes instructions on how to join the hexagons together using the join-as-you-go method of joining.

This cushion design incorporates the Dinky Hexagons pattern, using double knit weight yarn. This is a perfect stash-buster project, with each hexagon requiring approximately 2g of DK yarn. For this project I used seven Stylecraft Special DK colours – Meadow, Pistachio, Saffron, Fondant, Spice, Fuchsia Purple and Magenta, In total the yardage for this project is approximately 500g/975m (which I split across 7 colours).

Notes on the design

The hexagons are arranged according to the template further down the page. In total there are 240 Dinky Hexagons arranged over 24 rows.

The finished template measures 42cm x 42cm, which should cover a 45cm x 45cm cushion pad with a gentle stretch. I like to make crochet cushion covers slightly smaller than the cushion pad as this gives the cushion a nice plump appearance. Please make sure you carry out a gauge swatch – i.e. make one Dinky Hexagon and ensure that it measures as advised.

Materials

Cushion Pad: 45cm x 45cm

Crochet Hook:  4mm or size needed to achieve gauge

Yarn: A total of 500g/975m of DK yarn.

The sample uses Stylecraft Special DK in the following colours:

Meadow (yarn A)

Fondant (yarn B)

Spice (yarn C)

Magenta (yarn D)

Fuchsia Purple (yarn E)

Pistachio (yarn F)

Saffron (yarn G)

Finished Size

Cushion cover to fit a 45cm x 45cm cushion pad. Actual dimensions of the work are 42cm x 42cm, as a gentle stretch over the cushion pad creates a more compact finish.

Gauge and Tension

1 Dinky Hexagon should measure approximately 5cm across the shortest width and 5-5.3cm across the longest width. Adjust hook size if necessary.

Arrangement of Hexagons

The Dinky Hexagons are arranged according the diagram below.

Construction of the Dinky Hexagon Cushion

Once you have finished crocheting the pattern and have a piece that looks like to photo on the left below, which has the right side facing you, you will be ready to start to construct the cushion.

First, turn the work over, so that the wrong side is now facing you.

Right side facing (left) and wrong side facing (right)

Next, fold up row 1 so that it sits direct over row 21.

The hexagons at the sides, marked with arrows in the photo below (these are part of the underneath section) should fold in and tesselate with the hexagons in the top section.

Sew these together, leaving rows 22, 23, and 24 still unattached.

Insert the cushion pad.

Pull over row 24 towards you and align it with row 1. Note the arrangement of the hexagons in the corner.
