City Granny Square Pattern

This is a simple variation of the traditional Granny Square. I named it the City Granny Square as the stitches are separated and look like tall buildings.

The City Granny Square is reversible – see picture at the bottom of the page for front and back pictures. The pattern is simple and consists of treble crochet (UK terms) stitches, and is suitable for beginners.

Notes on the City Granny Square

You can work this square in as many colours as you like. If you are using one colour, do not fasten off after each round, instead turn over and slip stitch back into the corner space that you have just formed and then start the next round as stated.

I have worked 4 rounds in the sample, but again, you can adjust this and add more or less rounds. For this pattern you will be working the stitches in-between the stitches of the round below (in contrast to the working in the top of each stitch).

Instructions

Foundation: Using Yarn A. Chain 4. Ss into first ch to form a ring (or make a magic ring)

Round 1: Ch4 (counts as 1tr + 1ch), [1tr, ch1] 7 times, ss into top of beg ch to close the round. Fasten off Yarn A.

Round 2: Using Yarn B. Pull up a loop in any ch1 space, ch3 (counts as tr), 1tr in same space. 1tr in next ch1 space. *In next ch1 space work [2tr, ch2, 2tr] to form a corner, 1tr in next ch1 space*. Repeat from *to* until you reach the start of the round, work [2tr, ch2] in the space you started, ss into the top of the beg-ch. Fasten off Yarn B.

Round 3: Using Yarn colour C, pull up a loop in any ch2 corner space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr), 1tr in same space. Work 1tr in-between all stitches along the side until you reach the next corner, *[2tr, ch2, 2tr] in the corner space, 1tr in-between each stitch until the next corner*. Repeat from *to* until you reach the corner space where you started, 2tr, ch2 and ss into top of the beg-ch to close the round. Fasten off Yarn C.

Round 4: Using Yarn colour B, pull up a loop in any ch2 corner space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr), 1tr in same space. Work 1tr in-between all stitches along the side until you reach the next corner, *[2tr, ch2, 2tr] in the corner space, 1tr in-between each stitch until the next corner*. Repeat from *to* until you reach the corner space where you started, 2tr, ch2 and ss into beg-ch to close the round. Fasten off yarn B.

Subsequent Rounds (optional): repeat round 4.

Sew in your ends.
