The Autumn Blanket – A Giant Granny Square Crochet Pattern

As the leaves turn and the days grow cooler, I always find myself reaching for warm colours and comforting projects. The Autumn Blanket was born from that mood: a simple, mindful design based on the classic granny square — but worked into one giant square that grows round by round.
It’s beginner-friendly, relaxing to make, and perfect for using up yarn in a coordinated colour palette. My version features rich, autumnal shades, but this blanket works beautifully in any scheme — brights, pastels, neutrals, or a scrappy mix.

Notes on the Pattern used for the Autumn Blanket
- This pattern uses a traditional Granny Square – on this page you will find the written pattern and progress photos. A step-by-step photo tutorial for the Granny Square pattern is also available. A video tutorial can be found further down the page.
- The Granny Square pattern involves sets of making treble clusters – a group of 3 UK treble crochet stitches worked in the same space. After round 2 treble clusters are worked in the spaces formed between the treble clusters of the previous round.
- This Granny Square pattern instructs you to turn your work at the end of every round (except the border) to keep the square straight, and creates a reversible Granny Square.
- The starting chain (beg-ch3) at the start of each round of the Granny Square pattern for the main body of the blanket counts as 1 treble crochet.
- To change colour, join in a new corner space for neatness.
