Trellis Granny Square

This is my Trellis Granny Square – a delightful twist on the classic Granny Square. The intricate lattice-like structure is so pleasing and offers the benefits of having smaller holes compared to the classic Granny Square.

The pattern is simple and effective and involves a 3 round repeating pattern from round 2 onwards. The 3 round repeating pattern is all worked in one colour, creating a satisfying stripe effect.

The Trellis Granny Square is perfect for beginners and for those who want a mindless crochet project.

On this page you will find the written pattern and links to a video tutorial.

Crochet Skills Used

A simple pattern which uses UK treble crochet and chains. Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed.

Notes on the Trellis Granny Square

The pattern is a 3 round repeating pattern from round 2 onwards. The 3 round repeating pattern is a round of treble clusters (UK terms) followed by two rounds of treble crochet worked in-between the stitches.

Working in-between the stitches means that you do not work in the top of the stitch, instead you will be working in the spaces in-between the stitches of the round below. It is really easy to get the hang of it.

This pattern suggests you turn the work over after each round – this helps to keep the square even and it helps to make the work reversible.

The chain 3 at the start of the round counts as 1 treble crochet stitch.

The finished square is really stretchy and you may want to factor this in when deciding what to make with your Trellis Granny Squares. However, it does mean that the Trellis Granny Square is soft and squidgy! But if you want a tighter, more compact square, you may opt to go down a hook size.

Materials

The pattern will work with whatever yarn you choose and the appropriate hook size. In the instructions below (and in the supporting video) I have used double knit yarn (Stylecraft Special DK) and a 4mm crochet hook.

To make a 7 round square, as described below, you will need 3 different yarn colours to form the stripe effect.
