Trellis Granny Square Bed Runner

Trellis Granny Square Bed Runner

On this page you can find all the details required to make the Trellis Granny Square Bed Runner.

Bed runners offer a beautiful and easy way to decorate a bed, and can add a touch of elegance or character to plain duvet covers, making the bed and the room look more stylish and complete. It allows for personal expression and can be tailored to match the room’s decor, reflecting personal taste and style.

Compared to larger projects like blankets, a bed runner can be completed relatively quickly, making it an ideal choice for gift-making. Bed runners can be changed seasonally to refresh the look of a bedroom.

Bed runner sizes

Some typical bed runner sizes and dimensions are as follows:

Single 63cm x 165cm

Double 63cm x 225cm

King 63cm x 265cm

Super King 63cm x 295cm

However, you can customise the size by measuring the width of the bed and make a note of this, and then measure how much you want it to go over the edge of the bed on either side and add this to the width of the bed.

Width of the bed + (how far you want it to overhang x 2) = width of the bed runner

For the height simply decide how tall you want the bed runner to be.

For the bed runner described below I decided how big I wanted the item to measure rather than making a set size. My final bed runner measured 51cm x 196cm (20in x 77in) (excluding the tassels).

Materials

Crochet Hook:  4mm or size needed to achieve gauge

Yarn: DK weight yarn in 8 colours, 100g/295m of each of 7 colours and 300g/885m of 1 colour (as this colour is also used to join the squares and in the border).
The sample uses Stylecraft Special DK in:
Walnut โ€“ (300g/885m),
Spice โ€“ (100g/295m)
Buttermilk โ€“ (100g/295m),
Pistachio โ€“ (100g/295m),
Saffron โ€“ (100g/295m),
Pomegranateโ€“ (100g/295m),
Copper โ€“ (100g/295m),
Gold โ€“ (100g/295m),

Each ball/skein of Stylecraft Special DK is 100g/295m.

Notions: Scissors, needle to weave in ends

Finished Size

Approximately 200cm x 56cm (78in x 22in) (excluding the tassels). Due to all the joins, the bed runner will benefit from some blocking treatment to gently stretch it to size.

Crochet Skills Used

  • A simple pattern which uses UK treble crochet and chains.
  • The pattern uses the join-as-you-go method for joining Granny Squares.
  • Knowledge of basic crochet stitches, techniques and terminology is assumed.
  • Due to all the joins, the bed runner will benefit from some blocking treatment to gently stretch it to size.

Gauge

1 square made up to and including round 7 approximately 16cm x 16cm (6.25in x 6.25in) unblocked, adjust hook size as necessary  Gauge is not critical for this project, but may affect yarn quantities.

Notes on the instructions for the Trellis Granny Square Bed Runner

The bed runner consists of 33 Trellis Granny Squares joined together in an 11 by 3 formation The joining colour is Walnut yarn and the join-as-you-go joining method is used as the 8th round of each square is being worked. You have the option to work the round 8 with Walnut yarn around each square individually and then sewing or crocheting the squares together.

I added tassels to my bed runner and instructions for this are described below. Tassels are optional and can be omitted if preferred.

The chain 3 at the start of the round counts as 1tr throughout.

Instructions

You will need to make 33 Trellis Granny Squares.

The pattern for the Trellis Granny Square can be found here (includes a video tutorial).

Joining the Squares using the Join-As-You-Go Joining Method

Using Walnut yarn work a round 8 (this is the same as round 5) around each of the squares and join to the adjacent square using the join-as-you-go method. Instructions for the join-as-you-go joining method can be found here.

Edging

To finish the bed runner off, add a round of edging on the form of 1 treble crochet worked in-between the stitches as follows:

Using Walnut colour yarn. Pull up a loop in any of the corners. Ch 3, 1tr in-between each st. When you reach the intersection where two squares are joined, work 1tr in the corner sp of the first square (1), then work 1tr underneath the ss that joined the two squares (2) and then work 1tr in the corner sp of the second square (3).

Continue working along, when you reach the corner sp work (2tr, ch2, 2tr) then continue working along the next side with 1tr in-between each st. Continue around the bed runner. When you reach the corner sp where you started the round, work (2tr, ch2) in the corner sp and ss in the top of the beg-ch3. Fasten off.

Adding tassels to your bed runner (optional)

Using Walnut yarn add tassels along the two short sides of the bed runner, ensuring that the tassels are evenly spaced. The instructions for adding these tassels can be found here.

Blocking

Due to all the joins, the bed runner will benefit from some blocking treatment to gently stretch it to size.
