Vintage Rose Granny Square Beginner-friendly Crochet Blanket Pattern

The pattern is based on the traditional Granny Square and involves working in the round, starting in the middle and adding each round in turn.  The pattern requires 1000g/2950m of double knit yarn in nine different colours and the finished item is approximately 100cm by 100cm.  The pattern can be easily adapted to be bigger or smaller, if desired, by adding more or less rounds.  The blanket is finished off with a simple two-round border.

Notes on the Granny Square:

The pattern is based on the traditional Granny Square.  The Granny Square uses groups of treble crochet to form ‘treble clusters’. It is a really simple technique and suitable for a beginner. There are many different ways to make a Granny Square – this pattern has two chain stitches in each corner. The pattern also suggests you turn the work over after each round – I find this helps to keep the square even and it also makes the work reversible.

The written instructions are below with a photo tutorial. If you prefer a video tutorial please find this here.

Colour order for each round of the Granny Square

Border

The border is simply 2 rows of half treble crochet. You will need to continue with yarn A, which was used for the final round of the granny square. If you are planning on more or less rounds of the granny square, make sure that you finish with a round using yarn A as this continues into the border.

Complete final round of granny square (round 52) with yarn A, do not fasten off. Turn the work over and ss into the chain 2 space just formed. Ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr in same space. Work 1htr into each stitch along the side of the blanket, work [2htr, ch2, 2htr] in the corner, continue working around the blanket working 1htr in each stitch and [2htr, ch2, 2htr] in each corner until you are back at the start of the round. Work [2htr, ch2] in the corner space and ss into the top of the beg-ch. Do not fasten off.

Continue with yarn A. Turn the work over and ss into he chain 2 corner space just formed. Ch2 (counts as 1htr), 1htr into same space. Work around the blanket with 1htr in between the stitches worked in the first round of the border, work [2htr, ch2, 2htr] in each corner. Work [2htr, ch2] in the corner you started and ss into the top of the beg-ch. Fasten off.

Now enjoy your blanket!
