Summer Fruits Throw

Welcome to the Summer Fruits Throw.  I have named it ‘The Summer Fruits Throw’ as the colours that I used are Stylecraft Special DK in Plum, Raspberry, Vintage Peach, and Lemon. However, you could use any four colours that you choose. I love the richness and warmth of the colours in this blanket, but I have found these colours impossible to photograph and they appear to change with each second that the light changes. It is a simple design which involves traditional granny squares in four colours, and the finished throw/blanket is reversible.

Materials

The materials that you will need are:

Stylecraft Special DK (100%) acrylic (or yarn of choice) in colours: Plum 4 x 100g, Lemon 1 x 100g, Vintage Peach 1x 100g and Raspberry 1 x 100g. You can purchase this yarn here.

Hook: I use 3.5mm but that is personal choice. Use what you find is best or according to the yarn.

Stitch Guide (UK terms):

Dc – double crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the both loops.

Tr – treble crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through loop (three loops on hook), yarn over pull through two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over pull through two remaining loops.

tr2tog: treble crochet 2 together (yarn over, into stitch, yarn over pull up loop through stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yarn over, into next stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch (4 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through remaining loops on hook.

ch – chain

ss – slip stitch

Sizing/Gauge

I made 24 granny squares and the finished blanket measured approximately 84cm x 120cm (33in x 47in). You can make this as big or as small as you like. If you are making a bigger blanket then you will need more yarn.

My squares each measured 17cm x 17cm when the 8th round was completed (using size 3.5mm hook).

Granny Squares

This pattern uses a traditional granny square.  It involves sets of granny clusters/granny stitch.  A granny cluster is a set of 3 trebles (UK terms) (or ch 3 and 2 trebles if it is the start of a new round).  Each granny cluster is worked in the spaces formed between the clusters of the previous round.

I do not include a chain between granny clusters – but some patterns and tutorials do include this.  I usually chain 2 to form each corner (some patterns will have 3 chains).  There are no rights or wrongs with this – it is personal preference, so you can choose.

I also turn the square over after each round – I think this helps to keep to the square nice and even, but this is up to you too.

Pattern

There are 24 squares to make. There are 6 different designs (so you need to make 4 of each). Each square has 8 rounds.

To make Square ‘C’

Round 1. Using Raspberry yarn chain 4.  Ss into the 4th chain from the hook to form a ring.  Instead of this you can form a magic ring if you prefer (there are several videos on the internet demonstrating how to do this).  Ch3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr into the ring, ch2, *3tr into the ring, ch2*, repeat ** twice more.  Join with a ss into the top of the first chain 3 to close.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 2. Turn the square over.  Join Plum yarn with a ss in any chain 2 corner space (I always like to start in a different corner space).  Ch3 (counts as one treble) and then 2tr into the space, *3tr into next corner space, ch2, 3tr*, repeat ** twice more, then 3tr into the corner you started with, ch2 and the join with a ss into the top of the first chain 3 to close.  Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Round 3. Turn the square over. Using Lemon yarn join with a ss in any chain 2 corner space. Ch3 (counts as one treble) and then 2 trebles into the corner space, *work 3tr into the next space between two treble clusters from the round below, then work 3tr into next corner space, ch2, 3tr*, repeat ** twice more, 3tr into next treble cluster space, 3tr into the corner that you started, ch2 and then join with a ss into the top of the first chain 3 to close.  Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Rounds 4-8. Continue with pattern as outlined for round 3. Each subsequent round will have an additional treble cluster along each side of the square.

You should have 24 squares in all, 4 of each design.

My squares each measured 17cm x 17cm when the 8th round was completed.

Arrange your squares as follows:

AFED
BAFE
CBAF
DCBA
EDCB
FEDC

Joining

I used the ‘join-as-you-go’ joining method to join these squares.  This meant that I joined whilst doing the 9th round (all in Plum) for each square.  If you prefer to sew the squares together or slip stitch the squares together then you will need to complete the 9th round in Plum for all squares before you join.

Join-as-you-go joining method

You can find details of the join-as-you-go joining method here.

Border

Border

The border is simply 5 rows of granny clusters and a row of double crochet for the final row.  I turned the blanket over after each round, but this is up to you.  As this blanket is reversible and has no right or wrong side it does not really matter, so you can choose.

Border Row 1: Join with Plum yarn in any corner space, ch3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr into same space, continue along the side of the blanket with groups of trebles.  When you come to the join between 2 granny squares I insert the group of 3 trebles into the slip stitch that joins the two squares.  (Note: If you find that this ‘pulls’ the blanket so that it does not lie flat, you may which to try working a group of trebles into both corner spaces either side of the join or alternatively you may want to try doing a tr2tog in the first and second corner). Continue around the blanket with groups of trebles with (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in each corner space. When you reach the starting corner work 3tr, 2ch and join with a ss into the top of the starting chain.

Border Rounds 2-4: Continue with Plum yarn, turn blanket over. Ch3, 2tr in corner space, 3tr in each treble space along until next corner, *(3tr, 2ch, 3tr) in corner space*, repeat *to* until you reach the starting corner, 3tr in corner space and ss into top of starting chain 3.

Border Round 5:  Continue with Plum yarn, turn blanket over, ch2, 2dc into the same corner space, continue dc into each stitch along until you reach a corner, 3dc in the corner space, continue along with dc in the top of each stitch until back at the starting corner, 2dc in the corner and ss into the first stitch.  Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
