I made this summer bucket hat for my daughter, and she loved it. Bucket hats seem to be very popular at the moment and I have seen some lovely crochet ones. You can find the written pattern on this page. You will also find a video tutorial at the bottom of the page.
Sizing:
Crown section measures 6.5″/16.5cm wide. Band/Bucket section is 3.25″/8cm high. Brim section is 2”/5cmwide. This hat is one-size fits most – an adult medium hat size, for a head measuring 21–22 inches/55-56cm in circumference. If you want to make a bigger size then you can increase your hook size. Additionally, you can add extra rows to the bucket section or to the brim section to your liking.

Equipment:
- DK yarn – Cotton DK yarn in three colours. Main Colour = 75-100g, Yarn A = 20g, Yarn B = 20g. This sample uses Sirdar Cotton DK in Mediterranean Blue (MC), Aquamarine (yarn A) and Island White (yarn B).
- Crochet Hook 4mm – adjust to meet gauge
- Scissors
- Stitch marker
- Needle for sewing in ends
- Tape measure
Gauge: 3 rounds of circle pattern should measure 2”/5cm across.
Notes on the crochet bucket hat:
The crochet bucket hat is worked in rounds with the right side (RS) facing throughout. Each round is closed with a slip stitch to the first half treble crochet stitch of the round. The stitch used for this crochet bucket hat is the half treble crochet (htr)(UK terms), this is a half double crochet in US terms.
Stitches are intended to be worked tightly. You may opt to use a smaller hook to achieve tighter tension.
Place a stitch marker in the first htr stitch of each round to help you keep track, if needed.

Crown
Foundation – Using Main Colour (MC) make a magic circle (alternately ch4 and sl st into the first chain to form a ring)
Round 1 – Ch1 (does not count as a stitch throughout, except where specifically stated), work 8htr into the ring, close the magic circle, sl st into the top of the first htr to close the round [8sts]
Round 2 – Ch1, work 2htr in each stitch around, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [16sts]
Round 3 – Ch1, work 2htr in the first stitch, 1htr in the next, repeat [2htr, 1 htr] 7 times, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [24sts]
Check your gauge – Your circle should be 2”/5cm across. If it is much larger than 2”, remake either with a smaller hook or working your stitches more tightly. If it is smaller than 3”, remake either with a larger hook or working your stitches more loosely.
Round 4 – Ch1, work 2htr in the first stitch, 1htr in the next 2 sts, repeat [2htr, 1 htr in the next 2 sts] 7 times, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [32sts]
Round 5 – Ch1, work 2htr in the first stitch, 1htr in the next 3 sts, repeat [2htr, 1 htr in the next 3 sts] 7 times, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [40sts]
Round 6 – Ch1, work 2htr in the first stitch, 1htr in the next 4 sts, repeat [2htr, 1 htr in the next 4 sts] 7 times, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [48sts]
Round 7 – Ch1, work 2htr in the first stitch, 1htr in the next 5 sts, repeat [2htr, 1 htr in the next 5 sts] 7 times, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [56sts]

Measure your work – you should have a diameter of approximately 6.5in/16.5cm.
Band/bucket
Round 11 – Ch1, work 1htr in each stitch working in the BACK LOOP AND 3rd LOOP [80sts]
Rounds 12 – Ch1, work 1htr in each stitch, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round [80sts]
Rounds 13 – Ch1, work 1htr in each stitch, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round. Fasten off MC. [80sts]
Rounds 14 – Ch1, work 1htr in each stitch, sl st into the top of first htr to close the round. Fasten off MC. [80sts]
Round 15 – Using yarn A, pull up a loop, ch2 (counts as 1htr), work 1htr in the same st, sk st, repeat [2htr in next stitch, sk 1 st] until you complete the round, sl st into the top of top of the beg-ch2 to close the round. Fasten off. [80sts]
Round 16 – Using yarn MC, pull up a loop in the space between any two htr clusters, ch2 (counts as 1htr), work 1htr in the same space, work 2htr in each space until you complete the round, sl st into the top of top of the beg-ch2 to close the round. Fasten off. [80sts]
Round 17 – repeat Round 15 using yarn B
Round 18 – repeat Round 15 using yarn MC
Round 19 – repeat Round 15 using yarn A
Round 20 – repeat Round 15 using yarn MC
