Starting a new squares blanket design

I seem to have been working on this new project for ages, but I thought I would give you an update on where I have got to so far.

I started with these colours from the Stylecraft Special DK range – Pistachio, Meadow, Fuchsia Purple, Lemon, Blush, Pale Rose. I used hook size 4mm. The hooks I use are available here.

The pattern I used is a variation of the Granny Square, but the concept would just as easily work with the traditional Granny Square.

I have decided to use a contrast colour to make the bright colours ‘pop’.

Anyway, the update is that I am on the last few squares and will soon by looking to join the squares…..how do you think I should join these?

More colour blocks

I have to admit that I am a bit obsessed with colour blocks and single colour squares. I think this is because I just want to make something with as few ends as possible to sew in. I also had some beautiful Paintbox Simply DK yarn in my stash that I have been saving for that perfect project. You can buy Paintbox Simply DK yarn here (affiliate link – if you buy anything via this link, at no extra cost to you, I may get a small commission which helps me to run my website).

My first task was to work out what stitch combination I wanted to use. In the end I went with a combination of two different stitches – a combination that I used in a previous project or two, see if you can work out which ones.

Initially I was not happy with how the edges looked, so my second task was to work out how to create a perfectly straight edge. This took loads of attempts, but I was really happy with the outcome – more on this coming soon.

My third task was to work out how to do the join. In the end I went with a join similar to that I used on my Rainforest Patchwork Blanket, but with some little differences.

Now my task is getting the bulk of the blanket finished………and when the weather is fine I can sit in the garden and get in the crocheting zone!

I have had lots of comments on social media calling this the ‘ice-cream’ or ‘Neapolitan’ blanket – not sure what I will call it but it does remind me of ice-cream!

Modern Crochet Rectangle Blanket – free pattern now live

This modern take on the crochet Granny Square Blanket was a delight to design and make. This is a blanket based on rectangles, but a modern updated rectangle design with each rectangle using a single colour, creating a contemporary feel. You can find the full free pattern for the blanket here.

How to add tassels to your crochet blanket

This page outlines how to add tassels to your crochet blanket. Adding tassels to your knitted or crochet blankets can really finish it off nicely. I have done this on several of my blankets and throws. This is a quick and simple tutorial guiding you through the steps to make these.

Berries

I have had such fun with this project. I was inspired by a patchwork quilt design and wanted to see if I could replicate the rustic feel with crochet Granny Squares. I chose some wonderful Stylecraft Special DK colours and had such fun creating different colour Granny Squares.

I had a layout in my mind and wanted the Granny Squares to be ‘spun’ round 90 degrees. This also meant that I had to make done quarter and half Granny Squares too.

My one word of warning about this project is the number of ends to sew in – there were loads!

I hopefully will update on the finished throw soon – I am currently writing up details of the design. But if you can’t wait….then please visit my instagram profile, as I have posted a picture.
