Welcome to the Susie Baby Blanket.  I have named it ‘The Susie Baby Blanket’ for two reasons – firstly it is made up of the Suzette stitch, which is incredibly simple. Secondly my ‘baby’ sister Susie has just started crocheting, which is wonderful as now I have someone in the family who I can talk to who understands the wonders of crochet.  

Materials

You will need:

• Stylecraft Special DK (100% Acrylic) in White (1-2 skeins), Grey (1 skein), Clematis (1 skein), Duck Egg (1 skein) and Lavender (1 skein). You can purchase Stylecraft Special DK from here.
• Crochet hook.  I used a size 3.5mm hook, as I find that this suits my tension.  Use the hook that suits your tension/according to the yarn manufacturer’s guidance.
• Scissors
• Needle for weaving in ends

The Suzette Stitch

The Suzette stitch is simple and suitable for beginners, and is made up of double crochet (DC) and treble crochet (TC) (UK terms). 

For this pattern there is 6 rows of each colour separated by 2 rows of white.

 I have added a simple border made up of double crochet (DC) and half treble crochet (HTC), but the border is optional as the Suzette stitch leaves lovely straight edges.

Stitch Guide

• DC – double crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through the both hoops.
• TC – treble crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through loop (three loops on hook), yarn over pull through two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over pull through two remaining loops.
• HTC – half treble crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through loop (three loops on hook), yarn over pull through all three loops.
• CH – chain
• Sk St – Skip stitch
• Sl St – slip stitch

Sizing/Re-sizing

My finished blanket (including the border) measured approximately 74cm x 86cm (30 x 34 inches).

You can easily make a bigger or smaller blanket by adjusting the number of chains at the start and adjusting the number of rows. Your starting chain should be an even number.  Remember you will need more yarn if making a bigger size.

Pattern

Starting chain: Using the Grey yarn Chain 114 (or any even number according to the desired width).

Row 1: Continue with Grey. DC into the second chain from the hook.  Then TC into the same stitch.  Skip the next chain and *DC into the next stitch, TC into the same stitch, skip the next chain*. Repeat ** until the last two stitches.  Skip the second to last stitch and DC only into the last stitch. CH 1 and then turn.

Second chain from the hook indicated by where the needle is placed.

Row 2: Continue with Grey. DC into the first stitch (this is the base of your CH 1).  Then TC into the same stitch.  Skip the next stitch and *DC into the next stitch, TC into the same stitch, skip the next chain*. Repeat ** until two stitches remain. Skip the second to last stitch and DC only into the last stitch. CH 1 and then turn.

The last stitch of each row can be quite hidden and slopes down. It is indicated with the needle in the photo.

Rows 3-6: Repeat row 2 using Grey yarn. Fasten off the grey.

Row 7: Attach White yarn.  Repeat row 2.

Row 8: Continue with White yarn, repeat row 2. Fasten off.

Continue with row 2 for all rows in the following colour sequence.

• Rows 9-14: Duck Egg
• Rows 15-16: White
• Rows 17-22: Lavender
• Rows 23-24: White
• Rows 25-30: Clematis
• Rows 31-32: White
• Rows 33-38: Grey
• Rows 39-40: White
• Rows 41-46: Duck Egg
• Rows 47-48: White
• Rows 49-54: Lavender
• Rows 55-56: White
• Rows 57-62: Clematis
• Rows 63-64: White
• Rows 65-70: Grey
• Rows 71-72: White
• Rows 73-78: Duck Egg
• Rows 79-80: White
• Rows 81-86: Lavender
• Rows 87-88: White
• Rows 89-94: Clematis
• Rows 95-96: White
• Rows 97-102: Grey

Weave in all ends.

Your blanket should look roughly like this.

Border: the border is worked using the White yarn and involves three rows.

Border Row 1: using white yarn, start in the top right corner of the blanket. Chain 2 and work 1 DC into the same space. Work 1 DC in each stitch along until you come to the end of the top of the blanket. Work 3 DC into the corner stitch. Turn the corner and work one DC along the side of the blanket, working approximately one DC for each row ensuring that the stitches are evenly spaced.  When you reach the bottom left corner, work 3 DC into the corner stitch and then turn the corner and work 1 DC in each stitch along the bottom of the blanket.  Continue along the bottom and then up the right edge working 3 DC in the corner. When you reach the top right corner work 1 DC into the corner stitch and then slip stitch into the top of the beginning CH 2. 

Border Row 2: Chain 2, work HTC into each stitch around the whole blanket.  Working 3 HTC into each corner stitch.  When you complete the round, slip stitch into top of beginning chain 2.

Border Row 3: Chain 2, work 1 DC into each stitch, working 3 DC in each corner.  When you complete the round, slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 2.  Fasten off. Weave in ends.
