Heart Granny Square Scarf

This Heart Granny Square Scarf combines colourful granny squares with a simple, eye-catching heart detail. The hearts aren’t separate motifs or appliqués — each one is created by changing colours within a traditional granny square, with the contrast colour forming the heart shape against the cream background.
The scarf is made from 36 Heart Granny Squares, using six warm contrast colours with cream as the main colour. Once the squares are joined, a simple round of half treble crochet is worked around the edge for a neat finish. I added tassels to my scarf, but these are completely optional.
The Heart Granny Square comes in two versions — a narrow Heart and a wide Heart. Both use the traditional granny square construction, with carefully placed colour changes creating the heart detail in the centre. The colour changes are a little fiddly and do leave quite a few ends to sew in, but the finished effect is well worth the effort! For this scarf, I have used the narrow Heart Granny Square.

Instructions
Before starting the scarf, you will need to make the Heart Granny Squares. The full photo tutorial for the narrow Heart Granny Square can be found here:
You will need to make 36 narrow Heart Granny Squares in total:
- 6 squares with Raspberry hearts
- 6 squares with Stone hearts
- 6 squares with Fondant hearts
- 6 squares with Camel hearts
- 6 squares with Blush hearts
- 6 squares with Mocha hearts
All 36 squares use Cream as the main colour.
Work each square up to and including Round 4.
Assemble the scarf
Once you have made all 36 squares, arrange them in pairs following the layout shown in the diagram below.

Take care to follow the colour arrangement, as this creates the repeating colour pattern across the finished scarf.
Sew the squares together.
Edging
To finish the scarf, work one round of half treble crochet around the entire edge. This gives the scarf a simple, neat finish.
(RS): Join with MC with a ss in any corner. Ch2 (counts as 1htr), work 1htr in same corner space. Work 1 round of htr evenly around all sides, working (2htr, ch2, 2htr) in each corner space. Work (2htr, ch2) in corner space where you started the round. Join with a ss to the top of the beg-ch2. Fasten off.
Tassels (optional)
I added tassels to my scarf using the main colour, but these are completely optional. If you would like to add tassels, evenly space them along both short ends of the scarf.
