Granny Square to Rectangle Blanket

Introduction
The Granny Square to Rectangle Blanket is a colourful crochet blanket made from simple granny-style rectangle motifs arranged in a balanced patchwork design. Using just a few basic stitches, this pattern transforms traditional granny square-style techniques into a modern blanket with plenty of opportunities to play with colour.
The blanket is made from 60 individual rectangles, each worked in two colours and joined together with a simple whip stitch seam. A classic granny stitch border brings all of the colours together and creates a neat, finished edge.
This is an enjoyable project for confident beginners and experienced crocheters alike. The motifs are quick to make, making it an ideal project to work on a little at a time, and the simple construction means you can easily customise the size and colour palette to suit your own style.
Whether you’re looking to use up favourite yarn colours or create a carefully planned palette, this blanket is a relaxing and rewarding project that celebrates the versatility of the granny stitch.

Arrangement of the Rectangles
Arrange the rectangles in the layout shown below.

Joining the Rectangles
Sew the rectangles together with a whip stitch. This method creates a flat, flexible seam with a subtle ridge formed by the front loops.
- Place two rectangles together with the WS facing each other (RS facing out).
- Line up the stitches carefully so the edges match.
- Using a tapestry needle and a length of matching yarn, sew the rectangles together with a whip stitch, working in the back loop of each rectangle (the loops closest to the inside where the rectangles meet).
- Work methodically, joining the rectangles according to the arrangement above.
- Secure the ends and fasten off.
Border
The border is 10 rounds of Granny Stitch, one round in each colour.
Border Instructions
Border Round 1 (WS): With WS of the blanket facing, attach Lemon yarn in any ch-2 corner sp. Ch3 (counts as a tr), 2tr in same ch-2 corner sp.
Work 3tr in each space between treble clusters along the first rectangle until you reach the ch-2 corner sp of the first rectangle.

Work 1tr in the ch-2 corner sp of the first rectangle.

Work tr2tog across the same stitch and the first stitch of rectangle 2.

1tr in the ch-2 corner space of rectangle 2.

3tr in the next sp between clusters then continue with 3tr in each sp between clusters until you reach the next join. Repeat this across each rectangle until you reach the corner of the blanket.
In the ch-2 corner sp of the blanket, work (3tr, ch2, 3tr). Repeat around the blanket in the same way. When you reach the corner where the round was started work 3tr in the ch-2 corner sp. Ch2, and ss in the first tr of the round to close the round.
Border Round 2 (RS): Turn the blanket over. Using Dandelion yarn, pull up a loop in any ch-2 corner sp, ch3, 2tr in the same sp, 3tr in each sp between treble clusters from the round below to the corner; [3tr, ch2, 3tr] in the corner. Work around the remaining three sides with 3tr in each sp and [3tr, ch2, 3tr] in each corner. When you reach the corner sp where you started the round, work [3tr, ch2] in the corner, ss in the top of beg-ch3. Fasten off.

Border Round 3 (WS): Turn the blanket over. Using Duck Egg yarn, repeat as for border round 2.
Border Round 4 (RS): Turn the blanket over. Using Storm Blue yarn, repeat as for border round 2.
Border Rounds 5 – 10: Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 in the following colour order: Blush, Fuchsia Purple, Pistachio, Sage, Mushroom and Grape.

Weave in all of the ends.
