Giant Trellis Granny Square Blanket

The Giant Trellis Granny Square Blanket is a colourful twist on the traditional granny square. Instead of making lots of individual squares and joining them together, this blanket is worked as one giant square, with three-round stripes creating a simple but striking colour effect.
The pattern is based on my Trellis Granny Square, with the same three-round sequence repeated to gradually grow the square into a generous-sized blanket. It’s a straightforward, repetitive project that is perfect for relaxing crochet, while giving you plenty of opportunity to play with colour.
I made my blanket using Stylecraft Special DK in 11 colours, but you can easily adapt the pattern to suit your own yarn and colour palette.
Materials
Crochet Hook: 4mm or size needed to achieve gauge (gauge is not critical to this project, but may affect yarn quantities).
Yarn: DK weight yarn in 11 colours. You will need approximately 3,245m in total.
The sample was made using one 100g/295m ball of each of 11 colours.
Fuchsia Purple – (100g/295m),
Pistachio – (100g/295m),
Cornish Blue– (100g/295m),
Parma Violet– (100g/295m),
Raspberry – (100g/295m)
Dandelion – (100g/295m),
Blush – (100g/295m),
Denim – (100g/295m),
Pale Rose – (100g/295m),
Meadow– (100g/295m),
Duck Egg – (100g/295m),
Each ball/skein of Stylecraft Special DK is 100g/295m.

Finished Size
Approximately 135 cm x 135 cm (53 in x 53 in).

How the Giant Trellis Granny Square works
The Giant Trellis Granny Square is based on the Trellis Granny Square pattern, but instead of stopping after seven rounds, you continue repeating the three-round pattern to create a large square.

Border for the Giant Trellis Granny Square Blanket
The border is worked over 4 rounds. The first round is a round of treble clusters, worked on the wrong side, followed by three rounds of double crochet worked on the right side.
The border is a great opportunity to use leftover yarn from the blanket. I used Denim, Pistachio and Fuchsia Purple.

Instructions for the border are as follows:
Border Round 1 (WS): After you have finished working round 61 with Parma Violet, turn the work over (this will now be the wrong side). Pull up a loop of Denim yarn in any ch2 corner sp. Ch3 (counts as 1tr), 2tr into same sp, *[skip 2 sps in-between sts and work 3tr in the next sp between sts] until you reach the corner sp, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in the corner sp*. Repeat from * to * twice more, [skip 2 sps and work 3tr in the next sp in-between sts] until you reach the corner sp. 3tr in corner sp where you started, ch2, ss in the top of the beg-ch3. Fasten off Denim yarn.
Border Round 2 (RS): Turn over (this will be the right side). Using Pistachio yarn, pull up a loop in any of the ch2 corner sps. Ch1 (does not count as a st), work 1dc in the corner sp. Work 1dc in each st along the first side. When you reach the corner sp work (1dc, ch2, 1dc). Continue to work around with 1dc along each of the sides and (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in each corner sp. Upon reaching the corner sp where you started work (1dc, ch2) in the corner sp and ss in the top of the dc worked at the start of the round. Fasten off Pistachio yarn.
Border Round 3 (RS): DO NOT TURN OVER. You will continue to work from the right side. Using Fuchsia Purple, repeat as for round 2. Fasten off Fuchsia Purple.
Border Round 4 (RS): DO NOT TURN OVER. You will continue to work from the right side. Using Denim, repeat as for round 2. Fasten off.
Weave in all of your ends.
Blocking
The blanket may benefit from gentle blocking to help even out the square and achieve the desired finished size.
