Inspired by Spring Colours

Over the last few weeks I have been busy working out the colour palette for a new crochet blanket design. I have the crochet pattern in my head, but need to decide on the colours which will work best with the pattern.

In the UK, the weather is still very cold for April – I am still using my winter coat. However, as I enjoy walking around London, as well as working on my allotment and in my garden; flowers and blossom are defiantly making an appearance.

As nature bursts into life with the arrival of spring, it’s the perfect time to infuse the vibrant colours and fresh energy of the season into a new crochet blanket design.

From the gentle and more vibrant pinks……

……to the purple shades of bluebells, wisteria, clematis and California lilac.

Inspired by the wisteria, clematis, tulips, bluebells and more, I think I have the start of a beautiful colour palette.

My plan is to mix these colours up with some complementary colours including some vibrant turquoise and blue colours.

I hope to share more on the final colour scheme and the crochet design soon, once it has been finalised.

Starting a new squares blanket design

I seem to have been working on this new project for ages, but I thought I would give you an update on where I have got to so far.

I started with these colours from the Stylecraft Special DK range – Pistachio, Meadow, Fuchsia Purple, Lemon, Blush, Pale Rose. I used hook size 4mm.

The pattern I used is a variation of the Granny Square, but the concept would just as easily work with the traditional Granny Square.

I have decided to use a contrast colour to make the bright colours ‘pop’.

Anyway, the update is that I am on the last few squares and will soon by looking to join the squares…..how do you think I should join these?

Cath Kidston-Inspired colours in giant granny squares

I think many of us love the Cath Kidston colours. I certainly have many Cath Kidston items brightening up my home. I wanted to create something using the lovely bright colours.

For this project I used Stylecraft Special DK (100% Acrylic) in the following colours:

  • Cream
  • Lemon
  • Pistachio
  • Meadow
  • Cloud Blue
  • Pomegranate
  • Lipstick
  • Fondant

This project uses the basic granny square. Each square will have a total of 15 rounds. Colours are pretty random, but tried to be balanced and mindful of running out of a particular colour.

Now for the joining, I am joining on the 15th round of each square using the ‘join-as-you-go’ method.

I will update you when I have joined the squares.

Granny Squares – reds and browns

This week has been about playing around with some different colours for a new granny squares project.

I wanted to have a look at some colours from the red/brown palette.

I really loved how the colours of Stylecraft Special DK Lemon, Vintage Peach, Raspberry and Plum were working together. What a fruity combo these are turning out to be! I love the way that the granny squares look quite different when combined in a different order.

I think I might keep on going – and perhaps this is going to be the next big project.
